The beach, the river, and where to eat in Hanalei town, all a short drive down the hill from Princeville.
Hanalei Bay is the two-mile crescent beach directly below the Princeville bluff, backed by some of the most photographed mountains on Kauai. Guests at Kamalani Stay are typically in Hanalei town within 10 minutes, which makes it an easy base for a full day of beach time, paddling, and a proper dinner without much driving.
Hanalei Bay is really three connected beach parks: Wai'oli, Hanalei, and Black Pot. The pier end near Black Pot tends to have calmer water and is a good swimming spot for most of the year, while the stretch toward the west end picks up the gentle, beginner-friendly surf break the bay is known for. For a broader comparison against Anini, Tunnels, and Ke'e, see our North Shore Kauai beaches guide.
One of the best things to do in Hanalei isn't the ocean at all, it's the river. Rent a paddleboard or kayak in Hanalei town, then put in near the pier where the Hanalei River meets the bay and paddle upstream. Sunrise or sunset is the move here: the water goes glassy, the light hits Namolokama Mountain, and the river traffic thins out to almost nobody.
Hanalei town is small, walkable, and has an outsized concentration of good food for its size. A rough plan by meal:
Hanalei is also the starting point for two very different hikes: the short Okolehao Trail just past the Hanalei bridge, and the permit-only Hanakapiai Falls hike further down the coast. Both are covered in our North Shore hikes and hidden beaches guide.
Kamalani Stay in Princeville puts Hanalei town about a 10 minute drive from your door.
